Étienne-Jules Marey may not be the first name that comes to mind when we discuss locomotion, but he made significant contributions to its study. A physiologist and doctor, Marey found himself fascinated with the human body and how it functioned. This curiosity extended to other animals too. After meeting Eadweard Muybridge, he realised the potential of the camera, which led him to develop a photographic gun. His studies in motion went on to inspire many, including the Lumière Brothers.
