As a student of Lewis Hine, Paul Strand had visited the 291 art gallery operated by Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen. There, he found inspiration in modernist photography, sculpture and paintings. Strand’s style of photography went on to influence the f/64 group of photographers, which included Ansel Adams. He once said, “I’ve always wanted to be aware of what’s going on around me, and I’ve wanted to use photography as an instrument of research into and reporting on the life of my own time.”
