The steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Washington D C, USA were transformed by a great speech delivered on 28 August 1963. Nothing was the same again. One man stood at the podium and spoke about racial equality during the Civil Rights march for jobs and freedom. This man was Martin Luther King Jr. His 17-minute public address was iconic, and became known as the “I have a dream” speech.
Taken by an unknown photographer while Luther King Jr was waving to the crowds, the image signifies a defining moment in the history of the American Civil Rights movement. Before this, nobody had spoken out so inspirationally for the emancipation of the black man. The image signifies a million dreams, hundreds of aspirations, the writing of history and a sentiment so immense, that it could only be conveyed through a picture.
An excerpt from the iconic speech—“I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood…
…I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!”
