The once-popular carte de visites were eventually replaced by similar, but larger cabinet cards. They generally measured about 6.5 x 4.25 inches and carried the photographer’s imprint at the back. Often, they were portraits made in a studio environment. Like carte de visited, cabinet cards were also albumen prints. During its time, some photographers started hiring artists who would retouch the negatives of some pictures to remove blemishes and hide facial defects which could now be visible in these larger sized photographs. Incidentally, photo album manufacturers took a bit of a hit after cabinet cards arrived.
